Effects of Physical Activity on Postpartum Depression

03/12/2022

Postpartum depression is exactly what it sounds like- depression that occurs after childbirth. Not everybody knows this, but those who develop postpartum depression are at greater risk of developing major depression later in life. Symptoms might include insomnia, loss of appetite, intense irritability and difficulty bonding with the baby.

Postpartum depression is something many people still have trouble reaching out for. I have personally been through it and have so much compassion for those going through it and admiration for anyone who has come through to the other side of the tunnel.

Symptoms usually develop within the first few weeks after giving birth. But they may begin earlier — during pregnancy — or later — up to a year after birth. I personally experienced symptoms right before I gave birth to my daughter Phoebe, but after giving birth is when it became pretty bad for me. I cried for hours every day, and it took me so much longer than I would have liked to reach out for help- almost nine months.

A study found that women who performed supervised training (60 min) three times a week throughout their pregnancy were significantly less depressed by the time they reached the end of their third trimester.

A similar result was obtained in the 6th week of the postnatal period. This is part of the reason I am so passionate about pre and postnatal coaching here at Boss Squad Training.

So, if this sounds familiar- whether it be to your experience or what a friend is going through. I recommend reaching out to a medical professional, doctor, counsellor or psychologist.

Aside from this, focus on staying active, eating a healthy diet, prioritising healing and rest, seeking support from other mothers, and connecting with your baby. You may be surprised how much going to the park in the sunshine may help.

To hear more about my personal experience with postpartum depression, listen to Episode 6 of Working Out Wellness on Spotify. As always, no matter what you are going through, always feel welcome to reach out if you struggle with your mental health.
