The Importance of REST

28/04/2023

Hey there, Boss Squad!

Let’s talk about REST. Yes, you heard that right – rest. It may not be the most exciting topic, but it’s definitely an important one.

As a fitness instructor and gym owner, I know firsthand the importance of working hard and pushing yourself to achieve your fitness goals. But sometimes, we can get so caught up in the hustle and grind that we forget the importance of rest and recovery.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that more is always better. We believe that if we just push a little harder, run a little faster, lift a little heavier, we’ll get the results we want. But the truth is, overtraining can actually be detrimental to your progress.

When we work out, we’re breaking down our muscles. But it’s during rest and recovery that they rebuild and grow stronger. So if you’re not giving your body enough time to rest and recover, you’re actually hindering your progress.

Not to mention, overtraining can also lead to burnout, injuries, and a weakened immune system. None of which are fun or conducive to a healthy, happy lifestyle.

So, how do you know if you’re overtraining? Here are some signs to look out for:

  • Persistent muscle soreness
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability or mood swings
  • Decreased performance
  • Increased risk of injury

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be time to take a step back and reassess your workout routine. Remember, rest isn’t just about taking a day off from the gym. It’s also about getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and practising stress management techniques.

Now, I know what some of you might be thinking – “But Kate, I don’t have time for rest! I have goals to reach and deadlines to meet!” Trust me; I get it. As a mum and business owner, I know how hard it can be to make time for yourself. But here’s the thing – rest isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential.

So, my friends, I encourage you to prioritise rest and recovery in your fitness journey. Take a day off when you need it, get enough sleep, and don’t forget to enjoy the other aspects of your life outside of the gym.

And, of course, if you need some guidance on how to incorporate rest into your routine or just want some workout inspiration, don’t hesitate to reach out to me here at BST. I offer free nutrition and fitness consults to all new clients.
